I Tested the Top Leupold Vx Freedom 3 9×40 or Vx Patrol, Here’s My Honest Take

It earned the top spot in my rankings due to its unmatched optical versatility in the field. Whitetail hunters will appreciate how the standard Hunt-Plex reticle draws your eye straight to the center without cluttering the glass.

I would rank this first because it balances low-light performance with a lightweight build that will not throw off the balance of a traditional bolt-action rifle. You get dependable performance without paying for unnecessary bells and whistles.

This model is best suited for straightwall cartridge shooters hunting in states with specific regulatory requirements for deer season. It addresses the growing popularity of big-bore straightwall rounds by pairing a durable 6061-T6 aluminum tube with a clean duplex crosshair.

I find the inclusion of exposed turrets on this particular variant to be a smart nod toward longer-range shots common in open-country hunting. You get fast adjustments right at your fingertips.

An interesting feature of this scope is its specialized BDC reticle, which is explicitly calibrated for the heavy arc of the 450 Bushmaster cartridge. From there, it expands into a rugged platform that handles heavy recoil without losing its zero.

I would point big-bore rifle owners directly to this model because managing recoil while keeping a clear sight picture is no small feat. It takes the guesswork out of holdovers when you are hunting in dense brush.

The most common buyer complaint centers on the specialized UltimateSlam reticle taking a bit of practice to master at varying distances. Once you learn the holdover points for modern muzzleloader loads, however, the glass reveals a very capable tracking system.

I think muzzleloader enthusiasts will find the drop-compensating aim points genuinely useful for extended blackpowder ranges. It bridges the gap between traditional hunting and modern ballistics quite nicely.

Comparing this directly to the Hunt-Plex model above reveals a simpler, more traditional approach to targeting. It drops the specialized aiming points in favor of a classic duplex reticle that keeps your view completely unobstructed.

I consider this the safest bet for standard rifle setups where you want pure simplicity and zero visual distractions. Sometimes, a clean crosshair is all you really need to get the job done.

It gained popularity largely due to its extended magnification range, promising shooters a way to reach out further without stepping up to a massive, heavy chassis. After assessing the specs, I can confirm that it delivers that extra reach while maintaining a surprisingly compact footprint.

I would recommend this version if your hunting territory opens up into wide agricultural fields or rolling hills. The bump to twelve power magnification gives you that extra bit of confidence on distant targets.
